Splatter VHS – DIY horror Film Making the Horror Film: Slaughter Falls – From Concept to Chaos

Hey everyone!

For years, I’ve tried—and failed—to make a horror film that truly captures the raw energy and DIY spirit I’ve always wanted. Like many aspiring filmmakers, I spent years behind the scenes on other people’s projects, but every time I set out to make my own, something went wrong. There were countless scripts, hundreds of ideas, but never the perfect storm of time, resources, and guts to bring it to life.

But guess what? This year is different.

I’m stepping up to the plate and making my very own feature. It’s called Slaughter Falls, and I’m going all in with found footage horror. It’s gritty, it’s messy, and it’s exactly the kind of film I’ve always wanted to make: raw, real, and bloody.

The Concept: Found Footage Meets DIY Horror

Slaughter Falls is a found footage film set in the wild, unforgiving terrain of the Aussie bush. The story revolves around an urbex hiking crew who set out to explore the uncharted wilderness… only to find themselves tangled up in a horrifying nightmare. Think shaky camera, disturbing visuals, and lots of blood. It’s a ride you’ll want to take, but I can’t promise you’ll make it out alive.

The best part? I’m doing it all DIY—no high-budget production, no fancy equipment. Just me, a small crew, a bunch of effects, and VHS tapes. That’s right, we’re embracing the 90s home video aesthetic—shaky, raw, and completely unpolished.

How to Create a DIY Horror Film from Scratch: The Concept, Writing, and Filming Process

The journey to make this film started with a ton of prep. From sketching out ideas to packing the gear, I’ve been all about hands-on filmmaking. No budgets to hide behind, no fancy cameras to rely on—just pure creativity and a passion for telling the scariest story I can muster.

And I’m taking you along every step of the way.

From concept development and writing the script to practical effects tutorials (we’re talking some seriously gruesome stuff), filming, editing, and scoring, I’ll be sharing all the behind-the-scenes chaos. My goal is to inspire anyone out there with a dream of making their own horror flick. Trust me, if I can do it with zero budget and a whole lot of grit, so can you.

The Bloody Details: What’s Coming

One thing I’m most excited about is the practical effects. There’s something so satisfying about creating real, tangible effects that you can physically touch and see on camera. Without giving too much away, let’s just say that Slaughter Falls is going to feature some seriously gnarly moments.

Expect to see some disturbing scenes involving sharp objects, gruesome body horror, and—of course—plenty of blood. But I won’t spoil the details here. You’ll just have to stick around and see what’s in store.

But don’t worry, I’ll be sharing all the tricks, tools, and techniques I use to pull them off on a low-budget scale. You’ll get the inside scoop on how we make these intense moments come to life, and I’ll even break down the process of creating some of these effects so you can try them yourself.

A Bloody Adventure

From pre-production to post-production, this is going to be a bloody adventure. And I want you to be right here with me. Whether you’re an aspiring filmmaker or just a horror fan curious about how these movies come to life, I’m going to show you the whole process.

No budget? No problem. I’m proving that with enough determination, grit, and creativity, you can create something amazing on your own terms.

So grab your gear, pack your fake knives, and get ready to join me as I make this nightmare real.

Stay tuned for more updates, behind-the-scenes clips, and tips on how to make your own horror film from the ground up.
